The phrase “AYUSH approved” is often used too broadly. Consumers need to know what the underlying document actually is, who holds it and which activities or products it covers.
What a manufacturing licence can show
Subject to the document’s terms and current status, a manufacturing licence can identify:
- Licensed manufacturer.
- Manufacturing premises.
- Issuing state authority.
- Licence number.
- Permitted category or dosage forms.
- Listed products or endorsements.
- Conditions and validity.
It is evidence tied to a specific legal holder and scope.
What it does not automatically mean
It does not by itself prove:
- Every product sold by a brand is covered.
- Every batch passed every possible test.
- Every marketing claim is authorised.
- The government endorses the product’s effectiveness.
- The product is safe for everyone.
- Prescription or consultation is unnecessary.
- Other excise, narcotics, retail or state rules do not apply.
These questions require additional documents and product-specific analysis.
Manufacturer versus marketer
The company marketing or selling a product may not be the licensed manufacturer. The label should state the respective entities accurately.
A marketer should not describe the manufacturer’s licence in a way that suggests the marketer itself holds that licence.
Match the product
Check:
- Exact product name.
- Dosage form.
- Formula or classical/proprietary category.
- Manufacturer.
- Premises.
- Current endorsement or product list.
A licence for one premises or dosage form should not be used as proof for an unrelated item.
Label and claims
The label remains central. Review ingredient quantities, directions, warnings, manufacturer, batch, dates and storage.
Advertising should not expand a limited label into broad disease-cure claims. The omission of former Rule 170 from the Drugs Rules does not remove every other advertising, drug, consumer-protection or evidence requirement.
Quality marks are separate
Voluntary quality certifications and marks may have their own criteria. They should not be confused with the underlying state manufacturing licence.
Ask what certification is claimed, who issued it, whether it is current and what scope it covers.
