Quick answer: THC can poison cats. If you suspect cannabis exposure, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Do not wait for every symptom to appear.
Warning signs
Possible signs include unsteadiness, unusual sleepiness, dilated pupils, urine leakage and increased sensitivity to sound or touch. More serious exposures may cause agitation or seizures. The product concentration and amount matter; symptoms should not be dismissed as a harmless “high.”
What about products labelled CBD?
CBD and THC are different compounds, but a CBD label is not a guarantee of safety for your cat. The ASPCA advises veterinary discussion of risks and potential benefits, especially when a pet takes other medicines. Do not assume a human product or another animal's regimen is appropriate.
Prevent accidental exposure
Keep cannabis products, including edibles and CBD products, securely out of pets' reach. Include visitors' belongings in your storage precautions.
